. Child abuse, known as intentional injury and maltreatment, include: physical abuse, - neglect/child endangerment, sexual abuse/ molestation incest , tormenting of child causing disfigurement. State child protective service agencies receive over three million cases of suspected child abuse every year. In my country, Statistics showed 90% of child abuses were occurred in their home, and 65% were occurred by parents'.
The purpose of the study was to modify and use of 2 psychological test (CAT'S test = child abuse and trauma scale) and (MCMI-II = Millon clinical multi- axial inventory) to distinguish the personality characteristics in abusing and Non-abusing mothers.
CAT'S test includes, 38 Questions about punishment, neglect, sexual abuse and emotional abuse, but we omitted 6 questions about sexual abuse and added 6 questions in emotional part. This form answered by children. For avoid response set problems, some questions have reverse scored. For internal consistency of CAT'S test we used
Chi-square test (x= 17.0 P=0.000). We used Alpha-chronbach for internal consistency (a = 0.83). Same time we used another test with CAT'S test and internal consistency was 0.80. There was significant correlation between two test, in abused children (r=0.44, P=0.01) and non abused children( r=0.63 , P=0.001).
The MCMI-II or Millon is a true false questionnaire that has 175 questions. First version was developed in the 1970's and was constructed with scales that represented personality disorders contained in DSM III.
MCMI-II is used widely used in psychological assessments that seek to understand and diagnose enduring personality characteristics and to screen for other symptoms.
Millon II include 22 clinical scales in 3 groups (A=characteristics scale, B=characteristics disorder pattern, C=clinical syndromes).
Samples was complete this questionnaire at 30 minutes in answering sheet. The samples during answer must be in well mental status and good physical situation.
Characteristics scale include: Schizoid, Avoidant-Dependent, Histrionic, Narcisstic, Antisocial, Aggressive-Sadistic, Obsessive-Compulsive, Passive-Aggressive, Self defeating, Schizo type, Borderline, Paranoid.
Clinical syndrome scales include: Anxiety, Somatoform, Bipolar manic, Dysthymia, Alcohol dependence, Drug dependence, Thought disorder, Major depression, and Delusional disorder. For reliability we used test re-test(r=0.86). We success to modify 2 test as well as we can ,and then, used CAT'S and Millon-II in semi-experimental study.
The purpose of the present study is to distinguish the personality characteristics display the mental profile and psychological domains of abuser mothers based on personality scales pertaining to research hypotheses (dependent personality scale, obsessive – compulsive scale and borderline personality disorder) and some other personality scales.
The present study was considered as cause and effect research. Samples included a clinical group (abuser mothers, N=30) and control group (no abuser mothers, N=30), that were selected through judgment sampling and after matching with control group that lacks maltreatment with children were examined. Data was analyzed by
T-test and SPSS software.
The results showed significant difference between the two groups, and research question about the personality difference in the profiles of these two groups of mothers were proved. And in scale pertaining to researches, that is depended scale, obsessive-compulsive scale, the main difference between them were significance (P = < 0.05) .and the significance in borderline personality scale was more than the two other scale.
According to the present study, that we used modified test, it was proved that the personality disorder, mood disorders and thought disorders have an important role in child abuse phenomena, so that, the more changes in cognition and perception the more child abuse phenomena and neglect. The results of this study congruent with Kaplan and Sadock and the other researchers.
Key word: CAT'S and Millon –II, personality characteristics, abusing mother, child abuse.
