Mental health is an important part of general health. Incidence of mental disorders in college students located in developing countries is 10-12%. The purpose was to study the relationship between mental health and educational achievement in nursing-midwifery students in Kermanshah University during the year 2008.
Material and Methods: This analytical cross sectional study was conducted on 92 college students. Data was collected by questionnaire which consisted of demographic information and standard questionnaire SCL–90 (symptom checklist-90-revised). More than 1000 studies have been conducted demonstrating the reliability, validity, and utility of the instrument. This scale assesses nine symptoms (somatization, obsessive -compulsive, interpersonal sensitivity, depression , anxiety , hostility , phobic anxiety , paranoid ideation , psychoticism ). Data was analyzed by T-test and Pearson Correlation test.
Results: Mean age of samples was 21.7 (19-32 years), 63.3% were female, average point (as an index of achievement) was 16 from 20 (14-19). Results showed a statistically significant relationship between the mental health of students and educational achievement, income, age, sex, major, and place of living. There was a significant relationship between the average of point and phobic anxiety (P =0/042), as well as psychoticism (P=0/03).
Conclusion: Based on our findings, and incidence of mental disorders in nursing-midwifery students, we suggest that the development of educational programs for reducing stress levels and preventing mental disorders will help college students to complete their education successful. Social support and the use of appropriate counseling may help in the coping of problems, helping improve mental health.

Introduction: Health is the state of being –well and free from, illness in body or mind (1). The state of physical, mental and social well-being (2) and mental health is the acts of parliament governing the care of the mentally discovered. Several studies suggest that medical science students have relatively high levels of emotional disturbances such as mental distress, anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, and exhaustion, with data suggesting that medical students are more distressed, depressed, and less satisfied with life during undergraduate years (4). Some have explained stress in relation to their physical, emotional or social responses to stress, such as “poor sleep” (5). Mental disorders in medical students can cause them to refrain from studying and a decrease in educational achievement. The rate of mental disorder in many countries is found today, but because of differences in regards to tools for screening and diagnostic methods including interviewers, questionnaires, and method of sampling, rates of mental disorders are very different. Generally, the range of severity in regards to mental disorders is between 7.3-39.8%. For college students in developing countries, it is 10–12% (6). Mental health of medical students is very important due to their responsibility in relation to their patients. Following this background, we conducted a study on nursing-midwifery students. The purpose of the study was to study the rate of mental health problems and assess the relation between mental health and educational achievement in samples of research in Kermanshah University of medical sciences during year 2008.

The symptom check list –90–R instrument from Pearson assessments helps evaluate a broad range of psychological problems and symptoms of psychopathology. The instrument is also useful in measuring patients’ progress or treatment outcomes. The SCL_90_R is used by clinical psychologists, and professionals in mental health, medical and educational settings, and research purposes. The SCL_90_R test contains only 90 items and can be complete in just 12–15 minutes. The test helps measure nine primary symptom dimensions and is designed to provide an overview of a patient’s syndrome and their intensity at a specific point in time (6, 7, 8 , 9).
The majority of the subjects have family financial support (73.8%, P=0.03). there was significant difference related depression and anxiety and mental status between male and female and female subjects were better than male (p=0.05). In other studies show statistical significant different between mental health of students with sex , major , marital status. Also, between sex and depression & anxiety (p=0.05).(7). There were no significant statistical difference related to the mental health and level of parental education, place of living, experience of drop out study courses, with nine steps of mental disorders. However, the other showed that 28.1% of samples experienced minimal depression. Moreover, significant portion (9.7%) of our samples have severe depression, that is consistent with the other studies (6). Rafati’s results showed that 49.5 % of samples expressed lack of self confidence, and 13.4% of subjects had suicidal thoughts. About the education among the samples 25.5 % had difficult time completing their educational program, 49.2% were semi successful and 25% have completed the program with excellent standing (7).
It is necessary for the faculty of the schools to attempt at decreasing unnecessary student stress. These students will become the future health care providers, and it is necessary that they are in stable and distress-free mind sets.
In this study, average point of courses is divided into three levels (good, moderate, and excellent). Furthermore, the relation of these points to mental health were evaluated. The regression test showed a significant linear and negative correlation between mental health status and average point. In comparison to nursing students and technicians of the operating room, midwifery students have more problems with mental health status. Amani (10) stated in his research that incidence of depression was higher in these students than in the other students (4.21%). Forotan also said that there was significant difference between mental health and major of the students (11). Generally, the rate of phobia was 4.3 %, and for depression, anxiety and somatization, 3.3%. Hostility, interpersonal sensitivity, and obsessive-compulsive each were 2.2 %, and rate of psychoticism was 1.1%. Hashemi said that 11.8% of his samples have good mental health status, where 12.1% (single) and 4.5 % (married) have mental disorder (12). Rezaei said that there was significant statistical difference between mental health statuses in senior and junior college students (13). Tabiby (14) found that 33.8% of students experience high level, 47.2% moderate, and 19.1% low level of mental health status, as well as showing significant relations between mental health status and gender, satisfying of student from facility of university (P=0.001).
